Research has shown that prescribed opioids are not effective for relieving long-term chronic pain. Prescribed or not, when used long term they are very effective at creating long-term, chronic, life-destroying addiction. With that in mind, I do believe that education in these matters is essential to greatly reducing the addiction rate and accompanying misery. In addition, if we can create a blitz of accurate information, broadcast loudly, regularly and often from all sources of the media and education institutions (all grade levels), we can effectively “cut off the head of the snake”, that being the drug traffickers, by greatly reducing their market. The younger one is when becoming addicted, the more likely he or she is to become a lifelong addict. Our schools and the media have done a good job of convincing people of the extreme dangers of tobacco. Let’s do the same with the opioids.
